40before40 # 34: Build and Launch my Interior Design Business Website

I’ve been a busy busy bee.  I’ve done it.  I’ve built and now, with this post, I have launched my interior design business website.  Woohoo!  Pop the champagne, cue the launch party.  It’s coming people.  Time to party.

I have to admit this one caused me some consternation.  I used to consider myself techy.  I think I still am, to a degree.  Compare me to a millennial, well, probably not.  Have you ever built a website?  Or tried to build a website?  I realise it’s a lot easier than it used to be – thank goodness for website builders.  It truthfully didn’t cost me an arm and a leg, compared to going to someone to write my content and build it for me.  But, was it more time consuming to begin with?  Yes.  There are so many decisions to make.

Firstly, who to register your web domain with.  That bit I did in December last year, wasn’t too arduous.  Secondly, one needs a web host, this was arduous – so many decisions.   And then a website builder.  This was kind of arduous.  Some website builders offer hosting.  Some don’t.  Some are better at this, that or the next thing.  Some aren’t.  My top key priorities were ease of building the site, security, cost (including web hosting), potential downtime and website support.  Suffice to say it took me a good chunk of time to weave through this maze of information.

I truly couldn’t face deciding on a webhost, then a website builder.  Then a colleague suggested Wix.com which offered both, plus what seemed to be an easy to use web design builder with stunning templates (some of which are free, all available on a paid plan).  So, after much angst, and reading multiple online magazine articles, blog post from others etc, I decided to go with Wix.com  (sorry WordPress, I didn’t go with you for this one, still love you for this blog x).  Wix.com offers free website building, but not with your own domain. And that was important to me.  It had to be saradraper.com.au.  So I paid.  And I’m most thankful.

Whilst it has taken pretty much the entirety of two weekends, it wasn’t really the build process that took the most time.  I thought I had my content pretty much done.  I wasn’t wrong.  I had the home page, about page, and contact page done.  I knew what I wanted to start with for my portfolio page.

What derailed me was that I didn’t really have my services written.  Initially I thought I’d keep it simple with say, three services.  Then as I was building that page, my services kept expanding, and I ended up with nine, yes, nine services – and each needed its own page written and created.

In saying that though, it’s done.  And even if I do say so myself, it’s pretty damn beautiful.  And informative.  And you can contact me.  Stay tuned though for the blog.  And the Facebook page. It’s coming soon!

Oh, and don’t get me started on email hosting.  That’s still to come…a project for next weekend.

To everyone that has supported me on this journey so far (you all know who you are), I have so much love for you, with hugs and kisses.  Now, please give me (paid) design work.  Thank you.
